General Discussion / Pareto Principle
« Last post by RsteeleAUG on February 04, 2012, 11:08:39 PM »This is also known as the 80-20 rule or "the vital few and the trivial many".
Borrowed from Wikipedia:
"In business
The distribution shows up in several different aspects relevant to entrepreneurs and business managers. For example:
80% of your profits come from 20% of your customers
80% of your complaints come from 20% of your customers
80% of your profits come from 20% of the time you spend
80% of your sales come from 20% of your products
80% of your sales are made by 20% of your sales staff[9]
Therefore, many businesses have an easy access to dramatic improvements in profitability by focusing on the most effective areas and eliminating, ignoring, automating, delegating or re-training the rest, as appropriate."
What are your thoughts on this way of viewing the business model for lan centers? Does it still apply? I think if you can show the top 20% of your customer base makes up 80% of your profit that means it is true. It also works inversely that the bottom 20% of your customers cause 80% of the problems then there is the 60% of the muddle middle that don't cost you anything but are they spending enough to actually matter?
If you can remove, hinder, or stop the bottom 20% from causing as many issues then your business should improve and the problems you experience regularly should appear less often?
I'm not sure if this is a proven fact or just an ideal based on averages, but it would certainly help if you can focus your resources on that top 20% thus improving and increasing your bottom line.

General Discussion / Re: Internet Sweepstakes
« Last post by RsteeleAUG on February 04, 2012, 09:48:58 AM »I have had several stop by to check the place out and think it was a "GAMING" center and not a GAME center.
I always say I thought those were illegal? and just laugh.

General Discussion / Re: Internet Sweepstakes
« Last post by Alomax on February 04, 2012, 08:41:45 AM »I've heard about people encountering issues with the city offices because of gambling issues, but I have yet to actually see any business that would have been the cause of such caution in the first place. Apparently it's a very large issue in some Florida cities, and in certain parts of California. I know one lady who opened a LAN in south Phoenix who said the city wouldn't let her use the word "game" in her business name because they didn't want people to think it was a gambling establishment. So she called it "emag" instead.

General Discussion / Internet Sweepstakes
« Last post by consolegamer on February 04, 2012, 02:36:47 AM »Has anyone been impacted by moratoriums on giving out business licenses for arcades or Internet centers in an attempt to pass laws or decide on what to do to allow or prevent Internet Sweepstakes style businesses that have been popping up lately? Has anyone stopped in recently thinking your stores were these types of "gambling" locations?

Gamer Talk / Re: BETA Testing
« Last post by Crazyhowie on February 03, 2012, 01:11:22 PM »I was finally accepted into the Diablo III Beta yesterday!
I didn't think my wrists could take another Diablo with all of the endless clicking, but simple mechanic tweaks have alleviated some of that. For example, you automatically pick up various health potions and gold when you run over them. I've only dug into for about 20 minutes or so, so there isn't a whole lot more to share about it quite yet, but I'm liking what I'm seeing so far!

General Resources / Cheap Ass Gamer - Video Game Deals Community
« Last post by Crazyhowie on February 03, 2012, 12:36:08 PM »Looking over some old threads, it looks like a lot of you Game Center Owners either purchase from distributors or retail stores when it comes to buying games. I'm sure there is a delicate balance between finding a good deal and getting certain games on release day. Now, when it comes to finding good deals on video games, either new or used, Cheap Ass Gamer or CAG is my go to place.
I discovered the site www.cheapassgamer.com over a couple years ago and have saved hundreds of dollars if not more on my own personal gaming library. It's an active community of bargain hunters and video game enthusiasts trying to find the best deals on any game, at any time. Whether it comes to finding the best deal on a game for release day or games that hit the bargain bin, it's a fantastic resource that's worth checking at least a couple times a day.
There are a lot of other niche boards that are worth looking into for some great discussions and other deals on movies, free DLC alerts, and active contests from around the web and within the community, etc.
Anyways, I'm a big fan and I just thought I'd share!
